Her toughest match yet: Saving the planet

When you first meet Katherine Almquist ’24 and learn about her accomplishments and future plans, it’s almost tempting to shake your head in disbelief and think she’s just too good to be true.

As long as it takes…
It was her “toughest match of the season.” On a Saturday in April on court No. 4 in the Wilton YMCA (Skidmore’s home court until the new McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center 完成), Almquist was locked up in a tight singles 网球 match with Amherst College senior Calista 沙. Amherst was the seventh-ranked women’s team in Division III and would narrowly miss the national semi最后s.

But 网球 isn’t Almquist’s only passion.

Mycorrhizae are fungi that form symbiotic relationships with the roots of plants. She says they’re vital for our natural ecosystems because more than 80% of plants 特别是依靠它们来吸收养分和水分,这有助于推动全球格局 养分循环. The goal of the research is to determine the advantages of dual 殖民 防止氮和磷的限制-两种主要的营养形式 plants need to survive.

“The internship is quite intense,” Almquist 说. “But it is challenging me and expanding my brain in ways I never expected. I love the opportunity to grow and learn and couldn't be more excited to be here.”

During the summer after her first year 在火博体育, Almquist served as a sustainability intern for nearby Chikaming Township focusing on gauging public awareness and support for environmentally sustainable 改变,比如禁止在该镇7英里长的湖边使用硬装甲 Michigan shoreline. Hard armoring includes construction of bulkheads, seawalls, and dikes, and has been the traditional approach to shoreline protection.

The following summer, having joined Professor of Chemistry Juan Navea’s Laboratory of Atmospheric Physical Chemistry 在火博体育 and developed skills in conducting experiments and dealing with complex research questions, Almquist landed an internship with Penn State’s Drawdown Scholars Program,其使命是为全球气候行动指明一条积极解决方案导向的道路 气候变化.

Absolute boss girl…

Her leadership is not lost on her teammates.

The 网球 season is never over…
2022-23赛季的火博体育女子网球队连续第16次参加NCAA III tournament appearance, besting Drew University 5-1 in the second round. (Almquist won her match 6-0, 6-0.) Unfortunately, No. 4 Middlebury prevailed in the regional 最后. 无. 28 Thoroughbreds finished with a 13-8 record, earning their 12th consecutive Liberty League championship.
